Sho Kawano

I am a Ph.D Candidate in the Statistics Department at UC Santa Cruz, advised by Zehang Li and Paul Parker. My research focuses on models and validation for surveys, and more recently, disaggregated AI evaluation — see the Research page for more.

Before grad school, I got a B.A. in Statistics from UC Berkeley and spent several years working in clean energy, followed by a shorter stint in Medicaid administration for the State of California. See my CV for the full arc.

Outside of work, I like to meditate, travel, cook, cafe, laugh, and spend time with my wife Laura. This site is mainly a professional space but I probably can’t help sprinkling in what’s important to me in life as a whole :)
